A new guidance system that uses the sense of touch for elder people

Long description

Atelier Andrea Gasser is exploring new approaches to signage design in institutions like hospitals and care facilities, where cognitive abilities are limited. Working with architects Cukrowicz Nachbaur, the project focuses on the emotional and intuitive aspects of orientation, often overlooked in traditional visual signage systems. For elderly individuals, particularly those with dementia or visual impairments, touch plays a vital role in helping them navigate spaces.

Haptic design, which engages the sense of touch, is key to this project. A study with elderly participants explored how tactile elements in signage could improve safety and orientation. The aim is not just to point the way but to help people emotionally connect to their environment, making navigation easier and more intuitive.

Handrails, crafted by hand from various materials, were developed with input from residents. Each handrail is unique, aiding in navigation throughout the building. A description of these handrails is displayed in the entrance, featuring the text:

“UNDERSTANDING THE WAY”.
