mimycri by ANKAA works alongside vulnerable folks in Athens to repurpose textile waste and redefine collective narratives around migration.

Long description

ANKAA Project’s social business began in 2020 with the mimycri collection as one of its first projects, retrieving broken zodiac boats from Greek shores and repurposing their rubber fabric into durable bags. ‘From boats to bags’: these zero-waste, meaningful designs put ANKAA on the map, and are produced by talents with a migration background in ANKAA’s ethical manufacturing lab. Since the launch of the mimycri collection, ANKAA has evolved into a fully-fleshed social business, upcycling textile waste into over 30,000 products, raising awareness around forced migration across Europe. Other materials upcycled by ANKAA include event banners to truck tarps and old corporate merchandise. Going full circle, all profit is then reinjected into the development of tailoring (and Greek) classes delivered to vulnerable and unemployed communities in Athens. Students who graduate the Advanced tailoring course secure an 80-hour paid internship at ANKAA’s studio, manufacturing the same designs that once financed their vocational training.
