Long description

Lighting Bathroom is a design-led initiative that addresses the critical absence of sanitation and lighting in rural and underserved communities where infrastructure is nonexistent.
Millions of people—particularly women and children—face daily risks to their health, safety, and dignity due to the lack of toilets and public lighting. Open defecation and unlit environments create hazardous conditions and reinforce social inequity.
We propose a community-owned pavilion that integrates safe bathroom facilities with solar-powered lighting. Built using low-tech, sustainable construction methods and locally sourced materials, the pavilion is affordable, adaptable, and easy to maintain.
Originally developed as a research project in Benin, West Africa, the concept is now being brought to life with a full-scale prototype in New Delhi, India. It transforms essential infrastructure into a shared, safe space for hygiene, gathering, and empowerment.
Lighting Bathroom is not just a facility—it’s a replicable framework for dignity, resilience, and social connection, powered by design.
