Transforming tequila production waste into sustainable, plant-based textile materials.

Long description

Every year, millions of tons of blue agave waste from tequila production go unused. In 2024 alone, 464.2 million liters of tequila were produced, each liter requires 3 to 4 piñas (the plant’s core). This intense demand places significant pressure on the land, especially as monoculture practices dominate the five Mexican states legally producing tequila. While the spirit industry thrives, the remaining plant material is typically discarded.

Cuemái pioneers the transformation of this overlooked resource into biodegradable textiles. By upcycling discarded blue agave waste, we create sustainable fibers and fabrics that offer an eco-friendly alternative to conventional textiles. Our process reduces waste, prevents further soil degradation, and creates new economic opportunities for agave farmers and artisans. Bridging ancestral craftsmanship with modern material innovation, Cuemái stands as a model for regenerative design. Proving that sustainability, heritage, and circular design can coexist to drive global change.
