Carbon Cell’s foam is predominantly made from biochar, a waste-derived material and powerful decarbonization tool; its carbon remains stable for at least 100 years, often millennia. Leveraging the inherent porosity of biochar, Carbon Cell is a foam with a negative emission factor, meaning it helps to actively sequester carbon from the atmosphere. An optimized process balances biochar’s variability with Carbon Cell’s binder system, and a rapid microwave-heating method in vented, transparent molds ensures high-detail molded products. The resultant foam has high strength and low thermal conductivity, excellent moisture buffering capacity and VOC absorption, making it ideal for a range of applications. We see Carbon Cell replacing fossil-based foams in everything from luxury packaging and cold-supply chain to acoustic and thermal insulation in the built environment. This gives a variety of sectors the opportunity to decarbonise and promote their own circular economy principles.
