Long description

Atapand is a nature-based coastal protection solution that harnesses the strength of Pandanus tectorius and its prop roots to form a natural seawall. These plants are placed within a supportive structure that encourages root interweaving, creating a strong, living barrier against typhoons and sand erosion. Unlike concrete seawalls—which have damaged beaches on Amami Oshima, Japan, and disrupted fishing, swimming, kayaking, and scenic views—Atapand preserves both the environment and local culture. Made from waste-derived materials, the structure supports biodiversity and helps reverse the damage caused by sand dredging and soil erosion. Atapand is buried underground, remaining unseen while protecting the land and enhancing the natural landscape. It allows beaches to thrive, people to reconnect with nature, and communities to stay safe. Though designed for Katoku Beach, the solution is globally adaptable—simply by using the right native plant for each location. Atapand is a modern, sustainable way to let nature defend itself.
